A path of precious stones: Florence and its materials
Tour overview |
…”the city of Florence has the convenience of a wall as every other city, but no other city has such palaces and buildings just under the ground that have only to be excavated and brought above ground, as can be said of the beautiful Palazzo Pitti”… Istoria delle Pietre – Agostino del Riccio, 1597This journey through the heart of Florence investigates the various materials with which the city’s most important buildings were constructed and decorated. The tour will include the Chapel of Princes and the Opificio delle Pietre Dure (which also happens to be the birthplace of modern art conservation), both ideal places to learn more about one of the oldest artisan techniques in the city, a unique type of mosaic work known as Commesso Fiorentino. The tour will end with a visit to one of the last existing artigianal workshops where it is possible to observe some of this fascinating work in progres. |
